What is Ecosia?

At first glance, Ecosia looks like a regular search page (Google, Bing, or Yahoo), which has a lot of one-touch buttons for quick access to popular sites or social networks. Ecosia is a browser hijacker, which comes as an extension to Google Chrome, Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. The hijacker promises to increase the efficiency of the search, but this is not true. Ecosia replaces your search results and may redirect you to ad sites. After penetration, Ecosia changes the settings of your browser, replaces your homepage and search engine. Among other things, it can collect your private data and send it to third parties for analysis. Usually, Ecosia comes bundled with freeware without user consent. Ecosia slows down browsing and reduces the performance of your PC. We recommend you to remove Ecosia.

  1. How do i get Google back as my browser? Ive used google and chrome for years and suddenly it all changed to Ecosia. I hate it, its worse than Bing. My computer doesnt recognize Google as a search engine anymore, and i can only use Ecosia. Ive searched everywhere in my files and extentions and cannot find Ecosia anywhere else. Ive had these sudden changes happen before, but this is the first time its Ecosia and this is the first time its not recognized Google as a browser.

    • try to check your browsers’ shortcut. Sometimes even removing malicious programs from your computer and web browser can’t help. If you are still facing an unknown webpage when you open your web browser, then you might have your browser shortcut changed. To do so:

      1. Right-click on your browser shortcut, choose Properties.
      2. If you see a link to some website after .exe in the Target field, read on.
      3. Usually, you are not able to delete a link from the Target field, that’s why you need to click on the Open File Location button in this window.
      4. Once you’ve opened file location, select chrome.exe/firefox.exe/iexplore.exe.
      5. Right-click on this file and choose Sent to option, then Desktop (create shortcut).
      6. New shortcut will have no additional redirection links.
      7. Delete old infected shortcut. If you got one in your taskbar, delete it from there too.
      8. Now you have new and clear shortcut without redirection to unknown websites.
